In some cases, we will need to read the same table more than once in a single script execution. This means, querying the database (or QVDs) and pulling data from it, and then reprocessing that same data after the first read in order to make it adequate for our data model. Since the data is being stored in RAM after each query during the script execution, we can use that RAM-stored data instead of going directly to the original data source. This is accomplished via a Resident load. Resident Load is used for loading the data from previously loaded tables.

An incremental load is used to transfer data from one database to another efficiently and avoid the unnecessary use of resources. There are two ways to maintain the database up to date. They are
1. Extract the source table in its entirety.
2. Extract only the new and/or modified transactions from the source table and append those records to the ones we previously saved in our Base QVDs.
The second option is what we call an Incremental Load.
The basic process is described below:
- Load the new data from Database table (a slow process, but loading a limited number of records).
- Load the old data from QVD file (loading many records, but a much faster process).
- Create a new QVD file.
- Repeat the procedure for every table loaded.

Variables can be used in many ways in QlikView. They can have static values or they can be calculated. But when are they calculated? At script <a class="zem_slink" title="Run time (program lifecycle phase)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run_time_%28program_lifecycle_phase%29" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">run-time</a> or when the user clicks? And how should they be called? With or without dollar <a class="zem_slink" title="Inline expansion" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inline_expansion" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">expansion</a>? One basic way to assign a value to a variable is to use a Let statement in the script:
Let vToday = Num(Today()) ;
This will calculate the expression and assign it to the variable when the script is run. This is exactly what you want if you want to use a variable as a <a class="zem_slink" title="Statistical parameter" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistical_parameter" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">numeric parameter</a> in your expressions.
But if you want the expression to be evaluated at a later stage, e.g. every time the user clicks, what should you do then? One way is to store the expression as a string in the&nbsp;variable, using either the Set or the Let statement or by defining it in the Document Properties -&gt; Variables:

There are two ways to maintain the database up to date. They are Extract the source table in its entirety. Extract only the new and/or modified transactions from the source table and&nbsp;append those records to the ones we previously saved in our Base QVDs. The second option is what we call an Incremental Load. The basic process is described below:

A security in QlikView can be set up in two different ways:
-Built into the QlikView document script
-Set up through the use of QlikView Publisher.
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Authentication and Authorization</h3>
Authentication is any process by which it is verified that someone is who they claim they are. QlikView can either let the Windows operating system do the <a class="zem_slink" title="Authentication" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authentication" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">authentication</a>, or prompt for a <a class="zem_slink" title="User identifier" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_identifier" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">User ID</a> and Password (different from the Windows User ID and Password) or use the QlikView license key as a simple authentication method.
Authorization is finding out if the person, once identified, is permitted to have the resource. QlikView can either let the Windows operating system do the <a class="zem_slink" title="Authorization" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authorization" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">authorization</a> or do the authorization itself. For the latter, a security table must be built into the script.

The security is built into the file itself, so also a downloaded file is to some extent protected.
However, if the security demands are high, downloads of files and offline use should be prevented. The files should be published by the QlikView Server only.
Since all data are kept in one file, the size of this file can potentially be very large.
The script statements managing the security tables are given within the access section, which in the script is initiated by the statement section access.
If an access section is defined in the script, the part of the script loading the&rdquo;normal&rdquo; data must be put in a different section, initiated by the statement section application.

Access Levels in Section Access
Access to QlikView documents can be authorized for specified users or groups of users. In the security table, users can be assigned to the access levels ADMIN or USER. If no access level is assigned, the user cannot open the QlikView document.
A person with ADMIN access can change everything in the document. Using the Security page in the Document Properties and Sheet Properties dialogs, a person with ADMIN access can limit the users&rsquo; possibilities of modifying the document. A person with USER privileges cannot access the Security pages.
ADMIN rights are only relevant for local documents! Documents opened on a Server are always accessed with USER rights.
The access levels are assigned to users in one or several tables loaded within the section access. These tables can contain several different user-specific system fields, typically USERID and PASSWORD, and the field defining the access level, ACCESS. All Section Access system fields will be used for authentication or authorization. The full set of section access system fields are described below.
ACCESS: A field that defines what access the corresponding user should have
USERID: A field that should contain an accepted user ID. QlikView will prompt for a User ID and compare it to the value in this field. This user ID is not the same as the Windows user ID.
PASSWORD: A field that should contain an accepted password. QlikView will prompt for a Password and compare it to the value in this field. This password is not the same as the Windows password.
SERIAL: A field that should contain a number corresponding to the QlikView serial number. Example: 4900 2394 7113 7304 QlikView will check the serial number of the user and compare it to the value in this field.
NTNAME: A field that should contain a string corresponding to a Windows NT Domain <a class="zem_slink" title="User (computing)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_%28computing%29" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">user name</a> or group name. QlikView will fetch the logon information from the OS and compare it to the value in this field.
 NTDOMAINSID: A field that should contain a string corresponding to a Windows NT Domain SID. Example: S-1-5-21-125976590-4672381061092489882 QlikView will fetch the logon information from the OS and compare it to the value in this field.
 NTSID: A field that should contain a Windows NT SID. Example: S-15-21-125976590-467238106-1092489882-1378 QlikView will fetch the logon information from the OS and compare it to the value in this field.
 OMIT: A field that should contain the field that should be omitted for this specific user. Wildcards may be used and the field may be empty. A facile way of doing this is to use a subfield.
Should not apply OMIT on key fields, as this will change the underlying data structure. This may create logical islands and calculation inconsistencies.
If the User ID and/or the Password are not entered correctly within three attempts the entire log-on procedure must be repeated.
All the fields listed in Load or Select statements in the section access must be written in UPPER CASE. Any field name containing lower case letters in the database should be converted to upper case using the upper function, before being read by the Load or Select statement.
However the user ID and the password entered by the end-user opening the QlikView documents are case insensitive&nbsp;When loading data from a QVD file, the use of the upper function will slow down the loading speed.
Restrictions on QlikView Functionality
The controls found on the Document Properties: Security page and the Sheet Properties: Security page make it possible to disallow the access to certain menu items and prohibit changes in the layout. If these settings are to be used as a truly protective measure, it is important that the document users are logged in as USER. Anyone logged in as ADMIN can change the security settings at any time.
A user that has opened the document with USER rights does not have the Security pages in the Properties dialogs.
Dynamic Data Reduction 
QlikView and QlikView Server support a feature by which some of the data in a document can be hidden from the user based on the section access login.
-Fields (columns) can be hidden by the use of the system field OMIT.
-Records (rows) can be hidden by linking the Section Access data with the real data: The selection of values to be shown/excluded is controlled by means of having one or more fields with common names in section access and section application. After user login QlikView will attempt to copy the selections in fields in section access to any fields in section application with exactly the same field names (the field names must be written in UPPER CASE). After the selections have been made, QlikView will permanently hide all data excluded by these selections from the user
In order for this procedure to take place, the option Initial Data Reduction Based on Section Access on the Document Properties: Opening page must be selected. If this feature is used in documents that are to be distributed by other means than via QlikView Server, the option Prohibit Binary Load on the same page of the Document Properties must be selected in order to maintain data protection.
All field names used in the transfer described above and all field values in these fields must be upper case, since all field names and field values are by default converted to upper case in section access.

<h2>Handling NULL values In QlikView</h2>
NULL is not a value. It is a lack of value. It is a placeholder that marks nothingness. NULLs have certain basic properties: All QlikView fields and all data types in a SQL database are NULL-able.
<ul>
<li>In SQL, NULL does not have a <a class="zem_slink" title="Data type" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_type" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">data type</a>. In QlikView, this corresponds to the fact that NULLs are not dual, i.e. they do not have both a string representation and a numeric representation.</li>
<li>NULLs propagate. If you use a NULL in an expression, it will not cause an error. Rather, it will propagate through the expression and yield a result which often &ndash; but not always &ndash; <a class="zem_slink" title="Is functions" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Is_functions" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">isNULL</a>.</li>
<li>NULLs cannot be used as key value to join or link tables.</li>

Different Types of NULLs: Numerical zero
If a field has a numerical zero in it &ndash; 0 &ndash; then this of course represents a numerical nothingness, but it is certainly not the same as NULL. The field has a value and is hence not NULL. The IsNull() function will return FALSE and the record will be included in the calculation of both Avg() and <a class="zem_slink" title="Count" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Count" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">Count</a>().
Empty strings and white space
A string that looks empty is another candidate for nothingness, but also this is different from NULL. It could be an empty string, i.e. a string with the length zero, or it could be a string containing white space. In any case, such a string is a string and not a NULL. For these, the IsNull() function will return FALSE and the record will be included in the calculation of Count() but not in <a class="zem_slink" title="Empty sum" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empty_sum" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">Sum()</a> and Avg() since it is not numeric. Note that there are several type of characters for white space: soft blanks (Chr(32)), hard blanks (Chr(160)), the tab character (Chr(09)) and ideographic space (#3000/Chr(12288)). If you use the trim functions, you should be aware that these only remove soft blanks and no other characters.
True NULLs
True NULLs are cases when an existing record in the data model has a field where the value is missing and it hence is marked as NULL. These NULLs have all the properties described in the introduction.
There are several ways that true NULLs can get into the QlikView data model: Databases often contain NULLs and if you use <a class="zem_slink" title="ODBC" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ODBC" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">ODBC</a> or <a class="zem_slink" title="OLE DB" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLE_DB" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">OLE DB</a> to load data into QlikView, you will most likely get NULLs in your application. If you have joins or concatenations in the QlikView script, the missing values will be converted to NULLs. This is true both for the external SQL commands (&ldquo;<a class="zem_slink" title="Relational algebra" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relational_algebra" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">JOIN</a>&rdquo; and &ldquo;UNION&rdquo;) and for the internal QlikView prefixes (&ldquo;Join&rdquo; and &ldquo;Concatenate&rdquo;). Some functions, e.g. an If() with only two parameters, Only(), and most notably Null(), may return NULL and if these functions are used in the QlikView script, you will most likely get NULLs in your application. A text file cannot contain any NULLs in itself, so unless you load it using functions that can generate NULLs, or the table is part of a concatenate or a join operation, QlikView will not have any NULLs in the table. The IsNull() function will return TRUE for NULLs and the record will not be included in the calculation of any aggregation function, except Null Count(). How Does Display NULL? List boxes In the picture below, you have a selection of two customers that haven&rsquo;t placed any orders, i.e. they exist in the Customers table but there are no corresponding records in the Orders table. Slider: A single value, two values or a range of values (depending on the properties of the object) is selected in a field or inserted into one or two variables by means of dragging a thumb tack along the slider background. The thumb tack can also be moved by means of scroll arrows. Some sliders may incorporate a scale and tick marks for navigation.
&nbsp;Calendar: A slider/calendar object in calendar mode appears in the layout as dropdown box with a calendar icon to the right. When clicking on the calendar icon it will expand to a calendar control. It is possible to navigate between months and years by means of the arrow buttons or the month and year drop-down controls. After selecting a date or a range of dates (depending on the properties of the object) in the calendar control the selection will be applied to the underlying field or variable.

1. Text Search The simplest way of searching is text search. QlikView will search for field values matching a text string that you type.
In normal search (no wildcards are used), QlikView will look for words that begin in the same way as the search string. If the search string contains several words separated by blanks, QlikView will interpret it as several search strings and display field values that contain either of the strings.
If wildcards are used, only those records that match the entire search string will be displayed, that is a blank does not imply a logical OR. Wildcards may appear several times in the search string, regardless of their location.

Fuzzy Search Fuzzy search is similar to standard search, with the exception that it compares and sorts all field values according to their degree of resemblance to the search string.
Fuzzy search is especially useful in situations where misspelling is an issue. It can also help you find multiple values that are nearly identical to each other.
When a fuzzy search is made, a tilde-character (~) is displayed in front of the search string.
If starting a text search with a tilde-character, the text search window will open in fuzzy search mode. The search window will contain the tilde with the cursor placed after it. As you type, all values will be sorted by the degree of resemblance to the search string with the best matches at the top of the list. If you press Enter, the first value in the list will be selected.
2. Numeric Search This is very similar to text search. The only difference is that the search string must begin with one of the following relational operators:

3. Associated Search The search box contains a chevron (&gt;&gt;) to the right. After the equal sign you can type any valid QlikView layout expression, the expression will be evaluated for each field value in the search field. All values for which the search expression returns a non-zero value will be selected.

If a Qlikview application is large, obviously it will consume more memory while opening the application. Splitting a single large qlikview document into several separate documents will help in solving the issue.

 Removing Synthetic key:
In data modeling, synthetic keys might form if there two or more tables have common columns exist. Synthetic keys will greatly impact the performance, and it is better to avoid or to remove it. This can be done by removing the unnecessary links and join the tables explicitly in the script.
In some cases, reloading qlikview might take a long time to load. The best practice to overcome is using a Binary Load of static historical data.
Dropping Temporary Tables and fields:
The temporary tables are used in qlikview scripting mostly for doing calculations (Resident Load). These temporary tables can be dropped once when their purpose is achieved.
Handling Expressions/Calculations:
Complex calculation within a dimension or expression or in any of the Qlikview objects will give poor performance, and it will be better to use the complex calculations within the script of the QVW.
Avoiding resource heavy expressions or calculations greatly hinder the performance of the qlikview application. Replacing with simpler calculations will help and it's a good practice too in scripting.

What if analysis &lsquo;is a technique that lets you assess changes before they happen. It&nbsp;greatly helps the business to predict their outcome of their decisions, lowering the risk. It&nbsp;also helps to quickly test a wide variety of scenarios using real-time data pulled straight&nbsp;from the database.
What-if scenarios can be useful in many cases. The sales driven organization for example,&nbsp;can take advantage of understanding the impact of rising costs, decreasing quantities of&nbsp;sold goods, changes in selling prices and how all of this affects the margin, just in a few&nbsp;simple clicks. It&rsquo;s quite simple to create such a what-if scenario in Qlikview.
The first thing to do is declaring variables for sliders to increase or decrease the values in&nbsp;percentage (%) for Sales, Cost or Quantity. Navigate to settings and choose Variable&nbsp;Overview.

<h2 style="text-align: justify;">QlikView Data File Overview:</h2>
QVD (QlikView Data) file is a file containing a table of data exported from <a href="http://tekslate.com/qlikView-tutorial-tnterview-questions-answers/">QlikView</a>. QVD&nbsp;is a native QlikView format and can only be written to and read by QlikView. The file format&nbsp;is optimized for speed when reading data from a QlikView script but it is still very compact.&nbsp;Reading data from a QVD file is typically 10-100 times faster than reading from other data&nbsp;sources.
QVD files can be read in two modes: standard (fast) and optimized (faster). The selected&nbsp;mode is determined automatically by the QlikView script engine. Optimized mode can be&nbsp;utilized only when all loaded fields are read without any transformations (formulas acting&nbsp;upon the fields), though the renaming of fields is allowed.
WHERE clause causing QlikView to unpack the records will also disable the optimized load.
A QVD file holds exactly one data table and consists of three parts:
<ul>
<li style="padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;">A well formed XML header (in <a class="zem_slink" title="UTF-8" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTF-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener wikipedia">UTF-8</a> char set) describing the fields in the table, the layout of the subsequent information and some other meta-data.</li>
<li style="padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;">Symbol tables in a byte stuffed format.</li>
<li style="padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;">Actual table data in a bit-stuffed format.</li>
</ul>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">Purpose of QVD Files:</h2>
-Increasing Load Speed: By buffering non-changing or slowly changing blocks of&nbsp;input data in QVD files, script execution becomes considerably faster for large data&nbsp;sets.
-Decreasing Load on Database Servers: The amount of data fetched from external&nbsp;data sources can also be greatly reduced. This reduces work load on external&nbsp;databases and network traffic. Furthermore, when several QlikView scripts share&nbsp;the same data it is only necessary to load it once from the source database into a&nbsp;QVD file. The other applications can make use of the same data via this QVD file.
- Consolidating Data from Multiple QlikView Applications: With the Binary script&nbsp;statement it is possible to load data from only one single QlikView application into&nbsp;another one, but with QVD files a QlikView script can combine data from any&nbsp;number of QlikView applications. This opens up possibilities e.g. for applications consolidating similar data from different business units etc.
Incremental Load: In many common cases the QVD functionality can be used for&nbsp;facilitating incremental load, i.e. exclusively loading new records from a growing&nbsp;database.
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">Creation of QVD Files:</h2>
A QVD file can be created by one of three different methods
<ul>
<li>Explicit creation and naming using the Store command in the QlikView script.</li>
<li>Automatic creation and maintenance from script. By preceding a load or select&nbsp;statement with the Buffer prefix, QlikView will automatically create a QVD file&nbsp;which under certain conditions can be used instead of the original data source when&nbsp;reloading data.</li>
<li>In the GUI you will find QVD as one of the possible export formats under the&nbsp;Export...command, found on the object menu of most sheet objects.</li>
</ul>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">QVX files</h2>
QlikView data eXchange (QVX):&nbsp;Files are used for data input from external systems into&nbsp;QlikView. The main difference with respect to the QVD file is that QVX is a public format&nbsp;and can be created from external interfaces. It can be considered as the format in which&nbsp;custom data sources send data to QlikView via the custom connector. Data retrieval&nbsp;becomes optimized when complying with QVX specifications, although not as optimized as&nbsp;QlikView's own QVD.
Joins in Script:&nbsp;Sometimes you need to join tables in the script, i.e. you use two or more tables as input,&nbsp;perform the join and get one table as output for the <a href="https://community.qlik.com/docs/DOC-4957" target="_blank" rel="noopener">QlikView data model</a>. It could be that&nbsp;you want to denormalize the data model to improve performance or that you, for some&nbsp;other reason, choose to put fields from two tables into one .
By default, QlikView performs an outer join. This means that the rows for both tables are&nbsp;included in the resulting table. When rows do not have a corresponding row in the other&nbsp;table, the missing columns are assigned null values.
When you join two tables, there is always a possibility that the number of records change.&nbsp;In most cases, this is not a problem &ndash; rather, it is exactly what you want. One example could&nbsp;be that you have a table containing order headers and one containing order details. Each&nbsp;header can have several order lines in the order details table. When these two tables are&nbsp;joined, the resulting table should have the same number of records as the order details&nbsp;table: you have a one-to-many relationship so an order can have several order lines, but an&nbsp;order line cannot belong to several order headers. The only problem you encounter is that&nbsp;you can no longer sum a number that resided in the order header table.
There are two ways to perform joins in the QlikView script:
The external join &ndash; the SQL SELECT join
A join can be defined inside a SELECT statement, which in the script execution is sent as a&nbsp;string to the connector, usually a relational database management system (RDBMS) using&nbsp;the ODBC or OLE DB connection. Then QlikView waits for an answer. In other words: the&nbsp;SQL join is performed on the DB system. This is sometimes more efficient and more robust&nbsp;than if you let QlikView manage it. This is especially true if you have large tables; then you should make the join inside the SELECT statement.
A join inside a SELECT statement is often versatile: you can make any type of join that the&nbsp;database allows, e.g. also joins that are not natural:
TableA.key &gt;= TableB.Key
One consequence of letting the RDBM system manage the join is that the syntax of the&nbsp;SELECT statement may differ from database to database. QlikView does not interpret the SELECT statement. Instead it is evaluated by the RDBMS.
Examples of SELECT statements&nbsp;joining tables:

The QlikView join &ndash; the Join prefix:
The Join prefix in the QlikView script joins the loaded table with one that has been loaded&nbsp;previously in the script run. It is performed by QlikView itself. Just as the associations,&nbsp;QlikView joins are natural joins based on that the two key fields are named the same. If&nbsp;there is no common key, the Cartesian product of the two tables will be generated.
The QlikView join is fast but will need a lot of primary memory. So if the tables are large,&nbsp;the performance may become poor. For smaller tables it is however the best alternative.
The JOIN statement can be prefixed with the statements INNER, OUTER, LEFT, and RIGHT,&nbsp;which performs an inner, outer, left, or right join respectively.
INNER JOIN: Only rows that can be matched between both tables will be kept in the&nbsp;result.
OUTER JOIN: All rows will be kept in the result; rows that do not have a&nbsp;corresponding value in the other table will get null values for the fields that are&nbsp;unique to that table. When no prefix is specified, this is the default join type that will&nbsp;be used.
LEFT JOIN: All rows from the first table and those rows from the second table that&nbsp;have a corresponding key in the first table, will be included in the result. When nomatch is found, null values will be shown for the columns that are unique to the&nbsp;second table.
RIGHT JOIN: All rows from the second table and those rows from the first table&nbsp;which have a corresponding key in the second table will be included in the result.&nbsp;When no match is found, null values will be shown for the columns that are unique&nbsp;to the first table.

When using just the bare JOIN statement, the join will be made to the table loaded directly&nbsp;before the JOIN statement. If the table to join to was loaded somewhere earlier in the script,&nbsp;that table can be joined to by supplying its name in parentheses. In our example this would&nbsp;be achieved by replacing JOIN with JOIN (Table1).
