The Basic Cognos components mentioned here are self descriptive of their purpose.

Cognos Connection: Cognos Connection is the Web portal for IBM Cognos BI. It is the starting point for the browser-based access to all functions provided with the suite. With the help of the portal, content can be searched in the form of reports, scorecards and agents, it can be managed, structured displayed and published. In addition, the portal is used for example to schedule and distribute reports, for creating tasks, administering the server and the access permissions to content available to different users.

Query StudioThis component offer self-service reports and simple queries in answering quite simple business enquiries. One is also able to customize the report arrangement, filter and sort out data, including creation and formatting of diagrams.

Report Studio: The Report Studio is used for the creation of management reports. It offers two different modes which are the professional authoring mode and the express authoring mode.

The professional authoring mode helps to grant users access to the complete series of Report Studio functionality. This mode helps users to develop reports of any kind comprising of lists, maps, charts, as well as repeat functions. In professional authoring mode, one is able to use all kinds of data either relational or multidimensional, dynamic data is not displayed.

Express authoring mode offers a simpler user interface that has been designed for non-technical users. This mode helps in the creation of financial, traditional and management report in a user friendly interface. Unlike the professional authoring mode, it permits the usage of dynamic data.

Analysis Studio: The use of OLAP functionalities like drill-up and drill-down can help users to analyze large data sources and also search for information source relating to an action or event. Observing analysis of various situations allows easy identification of trends and understanding of irregularities. These features are not present in other forms of report. One can also include the drag and drop features, as well as elements and key performance indicators in the analysis. However, rows and columns can be switched. Making use of OLAP-functionalities like, drill-down and drill-up is important to be able to get a clear understanding of the sources of the information that is being applied in the analysis.

Event Studio: This is a mechanism used in quickly notifying users of events within the enterprise. As a result, persons can be put in place to check business events or special situations, and to always keep track of the changes in data situation or specified event. This notification can come in the form of an e-mail, by triggering reports or its publication on the portal.

We will discuss in detail about Cognos Overview and Architecture in Cognos Training Sessions.
